Burnt Coat Harbor Light

Burnt Coat Harbor Light

Swan’s Island, Maine
Built in 1872

The Burnt Coat Harbor Light stands on Hockamock Head at the entrance
to Burnt Coat Harbor. The harbor was the commercial center of Swan’s Island
in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when granite quarries and boat building
flourished around the harbor. But fishing was and is the backbone of the island
economy. Today Burnt Coat Harbor is home to an active fleet of lobster boats,
and the Burnt Coat Harbor Light continues as an active aid to navigation.
